The built-in playback check records a five-second clip and plays it back to you, so you can hear exactly what you sound like — the single most reliable way to catch a muffled headset, a mic picking up the wrong source, or a boom arm pointing the wrong way. The clip lives only in your browser’s memory and disappears when you leave.

First check the dropdown: the browser may have picked a different microphone than you expect (a webcam mic instead of a headset, for instance). Then check the physical mute switch on headsets, and your OS input settings — macOS System Settings → Sound → Input, or Windows Sound settings → Input.
Speaking normally should push the bar noticeably without pinning it at maximum. If it barely moves, raise your OS input level or move closer; if it slams to the top constantly, your voice will distort on calls — lower the input level.
The browser is filtering out sound that loops from your speakers back into the mic — great for calls, but it can dull music or instrument recordings. Call apps manage this themselves; the chip simply shows the current state.
The live meter does no recording at all. The optional test clip is recorded into memory on your device purely so you can play it back, and is discarded when you leave the page. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.
